rig self
Commands for updating or removing rig itself, as opposed to the R versions it manages. See rig self update --help and rig self uninstall --help for details.
Subcommands
rig self uninstall
Removes the rig binary, its shell completions, and the PATH entry the install script added, then deletes itself.
This only works if rig was installed with the install script (install.sh on macOS/Linux, install.ps1 on Windows).
rig self uninstall only removes rig itself. It does not remove rig’s configuration, its download/build cache, or any R version it installed. Use rig rm to remove R version and rig cache clean to clean the cache.
Without --force, it only prints what it would remove. Use --dry-run for the same preview, or --force to actually remove rig.
Usage
rig self uninstall [OPTIONS]
Options
--admin- Run in admin mode (overrides RIG_MODE and config)
--dry-run- Show what would be removed, without removing anything
--force- Actually remove rig, instead of just showing what would be removed
-h, --help- Print help (see a summary with ‘-h’)
--no-cache- Do not read or write rig’s cache (overrides RIG_NO_CACHE and config)
--user- Run in user mode (overrides RIG_MODE and config)
rig self update
Downloads the latest rig release and replaces the currently running rig binary with it.
This only works if rig was installed with the install script (install.sh on macOS/Linux, install.ps1 on Windows), because that is the only install method where rig fully controls the binary’s location. If rig was installed via the .pkg/.deb/.rpm package, Chocolatey, WinGet, Scoop, or Homebrew, rig self update refuses and tells you which tool to use instead.
This works the same way in admin mode and user mode: rig self update only ever replaces the rig binary itself, not any installed R version.
Use --dry-run to check whether a new version is available without installing it, and --pre-release to also consider pre-release versions when looking for the latest one.
Usage

--no-cache- Do not read or write rig’s cache (overrides RIG_NO_CACHE and config)
--pre-release- Include pre-releases when looking for the latest version
